| 内容記述 | We propose to define a microplate as a plate which does not have its own driving forces of plate motion. Microplates have originated due to the interaction between major plates. Thus they are mostly distributed along the boundary of major plates, although in some cases they may originate far from the boundary. We classify microplates based on the type of forces which contributed to have initiated their existence: shear, compression and tension.A microplate may evolve into a major plate like the Pacific plate which initiated as a microplate in the Panthalassan Sea in Jurassic time. In contrast, a major plate may reduce its size significantly due to subduction, like the Juan de Fuca plate west of North America. We call a small plate which still has its own driving forces as a pseudo-microplate. | |||||
